  • As children progress into the middle grades of their educational careers, the development of the child as a well-rounded and independent individual becomes a focus of our schools. Students are exposed to a wide variety of instructional facilitators, resources, and educational opportunities as they continue their journey to career and college readiness. Students will develop their interpersonal work skills as they collaborate with peers in all their classes through Project-Based Learning experiences and performance-oriented tasks. Project-Based Learning seeks to engage students in the application of their skills into real-life and personally relevant activities. These educational experiences will often span multiple content areas and allow students the opportunity to build beyond a single classroom.

    Striving to develop socially responsible and empathetic students is key to the middle grades structure and ensures that students develop not only educationally, but emotionally as well. A culture of high expectations and student success in our classrooms strives to keep the learning environment as a safe and intellectually open space. Students are able to grow as individuals as they develop their skills to successfully transition to high school and become college, career, and life ready.

  • 6-8 English Language Arts

    Middle School English Language Arts courses engage students in meaningful reading, writing, speaking and listening experiences that encourage critical thinking skills. Our curriculum equips children with the skills they need to succeed in middle school and beyond. In English Language Arts, this means a balancing of informational and literary text, a transferring of knowledge among the disciplines, a focus on text-dependent questioning and answers, a building of complexity in the texts that are read, writing from sources, and focusing on academic vocabulary to ensure students are college and career ready

  • 6-8 Mathematics

    The mathematics classrooms in Broward County are dynamic, powerful, and enriching environments where students participate in active learning.  Our mathematics curriculum, programs, and practices are designed to meet individual learning styles, foster the use of multiple approaches to solve problems, and show different ways of thinking while promoting equity and access for all students.  Students in Broward County mathematics classrooms are encouraged to talk about math, explore and describe observations, explain methods, and ask questions.  It is our mission to help students build more flexible and efficient ways to solve increasingly complex problems, become problem solvers, and to become college, career, and life ready.

  • 6-8 Science

    Middle school science courses assist students in becoming life-long learners who grow in their understanding of the world.  Science is everywhere and understanding how it plays a role in our daily lives gives students a great foundation for any career they choose.  Students are engaged in active learning by making real-world connections of scientific topics that are interconnected and multifaceted.  Students are given the opportunity to expand their skills in scientific explanations, methods, and critical thinking by practicing in laboratory investigations. Each grade level has its own standards from each science domain that build upon the learning progression.

  • 6-8 Social Studies

    Broward County Public Schools middle school students in Social Studies courses have the opportunity to engage in learning high level content and skills as required by the State of Florida's State Academic Standards for Social Studies integrated with Florida's Benchmark for Excellent Student Thinking (B.E.S.T.) Standards.  Students learn concepts and content in the areas of  World History, Civics, and American History through a variety of required and elective courses.

Tips for Parents

  • Parent involvement in the education of their child is extremely important throughout all stages of their academic careers.  Below are some tips for parents on how they can support their child at home to be successful in school.

    Send Your Child to School Ready to Learn: 

    Make sure your child gets sleep each and every night so your child is fully rested. Also, make sure that your child eats a nutritious breakfast every morning to make sure they are ready for the start of their school day.

    Get to know your child’s teachers:

    Visit your child’s school when you can for functions and meetings such as open house, school orientation, teacher-parent conferences, PTSA meetings, etc. Positive home-school relationships help your child flourish during their school journey.

    Support Homework Expectations:

    Establish routines at home to support daily homework and study skills. Providing an environment at home where your child can review what they learned at school and practice skills can help with achievement.

    Teach Organizational Skills:

    Work with your child to make sure he or she has all of their needed supplies for class. Being prepared helps children with organizational skills. Also, when appropriate, teach your child to have a “to-do” list or check their agenda/planner. Repetition and routines help your child in this area.

    Take Attendance Seriously:

    If kids are sick or not feeling well, it’s ok to stay home to recover.  Otherwise, children should come to school each and every day so they don’t fall behind, which can be stressful. When students come to school every day, their chances of excelling increases.
