The Literacy Department is committed to nurturing the love for reading and developing a strong literacy foundation for all students by providing professional learning, training, and support to school leaders, literacy coaches, and classroom teachers with the appropriate identification, placement, and interventions for students identified with reading deficiencies. The BCPS Literacy Department Website serves as a resource for parents to support their children at home with reading.

Broward is participating in the New Worlds Reading Initiative (NWRI) and aims to have all eligible children (students identified as reading below grade level) enrolled in the program. The New Worlds Reading Initiative will deliver books to the homes of enrolled students each month from December through June, completely free of charge. The program is designed to create at-home libraries for K-5 students and foster a love for reading among students and their families. Once an eligible student is enrolled by the parent/caregiver, they will be eligible for participation until graduating from fifth grade, unless they choose to no longer participate. Enrollment is open for eligible students. For more information to see if your child was eligible, reach out to your child's teacher or school's Literacy Coach.
